William Hogarth
November 10, 1697 - October 26, 1764
Initiated in 1725 at the Hand & Apple Tree Lodge , Little Queen Street.
Grand Steward in 1734
Hogarth has designed the Grand Steward's Jewel for the Grand Lodge of England.
One of my favorite engravings.
Take your time to appreciate this satire. The drunk Worshipful Master receiving the contains of a chamber pot, his very large apron, the tyler, the barber...
The Worshipful Master, wearing a collar with square, is Sir Thomas de Veil, a member of Hogarth's first Lodge, meeting at the Vine in 1729.
The Tyler with sword, key and lamp, is Bro. Montgomerie, the Grand Tyler.
The tavern may be identified as the Rummer and Grapes, Channel Row, Westminster, the meeting place of Lodge No. 4 from 1717 to 1723.
